Microtunneling in Downtown Montreal

Geotechnical Campaign and Feasibility Study

The choice of a trenchless technology is primarily based on the in-situ soil conditions. Therefore, an exhaustive geotechnical campaign was conducted for this project.

The applicability of potential trenchless techniques was evaluated based on the required installation precision, soil settlement, the size of the work areas, execution speed, project cost, and the risks associated with the microtunneling technique.

Engineering

Engineering

The design calculations were performed specifically for the microtunneling technique according to industry standards.

  • Induced stresses on the microtunneling face;
  • Friction on the pipe;
  • Thrust forces;
  • Pipe thickness and strength;
  • Soil settlement and heave;
  • Annular pressure;
  • Tunnel face stability;
  • Tunnel wall stability;
  • Tunnel closure.
